Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece and the capital of the geographic region of Macedonia. Ιt has a continuous life of 2300 years, as it was founded around 315 BC by King Cassandros of Macedonia, who named the new city after his wife Thessaloniki, the sister of Alexander the Great. It flourished under the Roman and Byzantine period and is the city of important Roman and Byzantine monuments. In 1988, fifteen monuments of Thessaloniki were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
