Demetra Sfendoni-Mentzou is Professor Emerita of Philosophy of Science and the Founding President of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Aristotle Studies (DI.K.A.M.), of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki-Greece (A.U.Th.). She was educated at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and at Oxford University. Among the scholarships/awards she received are: British Council Scholarship for post-graduate studies, Oxford University (1977-78); Visiting Research Scholarship of the British Council, Oxford University (1986); Fulbright Senior Visiting Scholarship, Harvard University (1991); she was also one of the ten Greek nominees for the award “Woman of Europe” (1987) sponsored by the Council of Europe. She has been teaching for a period of four decades, at the Department of Philosophy, AUTh. She has also taught at York University, Toronto-Canada. Demetra Sfendoni-Mentzou has lectured at a big number of Universities in Canada, the USA and Europe, and participated in International Conferences in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, South Corea, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain and USA.
Her research and teaching fields of interest are: Aristotle, Philosophy of Science, Theory of Knowledge, C. S. Peirce, and she specializes in Aristotle’s Philosophy of Nature, proposing a Neo-Aristotelian perspective on Science. Her publications as author or editor include: Proceedings of the World Congress “Aristotle 2400 Years” (A.U.Th. & DIKAM, 2019), Aristotle – Contemporary Perspectives on his thought. On the 2400th Anniversary since Aristotle’s Birth (De Gruyter, 2018), Le Temps chez Aristote (Vrin-ΟΥΣΙΑ/OUSIA, 2016), Aristotle Today: Perspectives of Aristotle’s Philosophy of Nature and Contemporary Physics (in Greek, ZITI, 2010), Philosophy of the Sciences, Vols. I. & II (in Greek, ZITI, 2008), Aristotle and Contemporary Science, Vols I. & II (Peter Lang, 2000 & 2001).
Her academic activities include the organizing of Colloquia, Seminars, Round Tables, Cultural Activities, International Conferences and Congresses, most notably: 23rd World Congress of Philosophy, (co-vice president), Athens 2013, World Congress “Aristotle 2400 Years,” (President), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki-ancient Mieza-ancient Stageira, May 23-28, 2016, International Conference, Aristotle and Contemporary Physics, co-organized with CERN (President), A.U.Th., 2014, Pan-Hellenic Conference, Philosophies of Science (President), AUTh, 2006, Aristotle and Contemporary Science (President), A.U.Th., 1997. Demetra Sfendoni-Mentzou has served as President of the Greek Philosophical Society, 2006-8 (during her presidency the candidacy of the Greek Philosophical Society won the decision of the General Assembly of FISP—for the first time since 1900—to bring the 23rd World Congress of Philosophy in Greece, in the year 2013, http://sfendoniwcp2013news.blogspot.com/); President of the Charles S. Peirce Society in the USA, 2014-15 (during her presidency the Charles S. Peirce Society and the Peirce Foundation organized the Charles S. Peirce International Centennial Congress, University of Massachusetts Lowell, July 2014). She has served as President 12 times since 2000 and is currently the President of the Association of Fulbright Scholars.
