It is with great pleasure and pride, that the Interdisciplinary Centre for Aristotle Studies, A.U.Th., (DIKAM) announces the election of Demetra Sfendoni-Mentzou, Professor Emerita of Philosophy of Science and President of DI.K.A.M. as a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, ÖAW), in the class of “Humanities and Social Sciences.”
In the announcement issued by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Rector, Professor Nikolaos G. Papaioannou, stated: “This distinction is an honor for the Aristotle University, which Professor Demetra Sfendoni-Mentzou has served and continues to serve with dedication and consistency.”
In this same announcement, it is pointed out that Demetra Sfendoni-Mentzou, “is the only female Greek Professor elected in this field, as well as the only member of Aristotle University who is elected as a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
The election of Professor Sfendoni-Mentzou was based on her international academic achievement and academic reputation in the field of philosophy of science and primarily in the field of the study and promotion of Aristotle’s work through an interdisciplinary approach, but also through the study of the Stagerite philosopher in light of today’s data in the fields of science, of moral and political philosophy, of education, etc.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Professor Konstantinos Bikos, issued the following announcement on the website of the Deanery: “Dear members of the Faculty of Philosophy, it is with great pleasure and pride that I announce to you that Professor Demetra Sfendoni-Mentzou, Professor Emerita of Philosophy of Science and President of the Interdisciplinary Center for Aristotelian Studies, AUTh, was elected as a new member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, ÖAW).
Professor Sfendoni-Mentzou will be active among 770 world-renowned scientists, especially in the Humanities and Social Sciences Division of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She is invited to the Welcome Ceremony for new members on Friday 12 May 2023 in Vienna.
