ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI has played a key role in the substantial engagement of the member of the Canadian Parliament James Karygiannis on the matter of the gold mines in Chalkidiki.
15 days ago Mr. Karygiannis, as a member of the “WORLD HELLENIC INTER-PARLIAMENTARY ASSOCIATION” (W.H.I.A), took part in the CULTUTAL PROMENADE IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ARISTOTLE AND ALEXANDER THE GREAT, which was organized by the “INTERDISCIPLINARY CENTRE FOR ARISTOTLE STUDIES” of ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI for honoring the members of W.H.I.A. (http://www.auth.gr/news/press/16130).
The members of W.H.I.A. are Members of Parliaments and Senators of Greek descent in the Parliaments of all countries across the globe. The programme of the “Cultural Promenade” included, among others, a visit to the Archaeological site of ancient STAGEIRA, birthplace of Aristotle, where, except their acquaintance with this GLOBAL MONUMENT of our cultural heritage, the members of W.H.I.A., including Mr. Karygiannis, were given the opportunity to be informed by representatives of the local community on the problem of the gold mines.
Mr. James Karygiannis promised that when he returned to Canada he would responsibly examine the matter, and if he found that there are reasonable fears about the destruction of the environment, he would bring it to the federal parliament of Canada, something that he did (http://karygiannis.net/eldorado)
Therefore, within the context of the “Cultural promenade” that was initiated and organized by the “Interdisciplinary Centre for Aristotle Studies”, as well as within the context of the meeting between the Rectors and Senate of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the members of W.H.I.A., there were discussed important matters regarding not only the possibilities of cooperation between Universities and other Institutions of the countries, in the parliaments of which the Greek Diaspora holds important positions, but also on highly critical matters, such as the gold mines, that concern the whole society.
It is particularly pleasant that this initiative, among all others, contributed to international exposure of the environmental problem of Chalkidiki.
The President The General Secretary
Demetra Sfendoni – Mentzou Zacharias Scouras
